The Beginner's Chess Page

Some people think chess is the greatest game humans have ever invented. You can play chess with your friends, with your computer, or online with people you've never even met!

If you're a beginner, and you'd like to learn more about the game, here's a site you should know about. It will introduce you to chess rules, language, tactics--and even give you some ideas on how to get started on playing chess on the internet:

You can find plenty of good books for beginning chess players in your library or bookstore. Here are two I recommend:

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess,
by Bobby Fischer, Stuart Margulies, and Donn Mosenfelder,
Bantam Books, 1992

Comprehensive Chess Course:
Learn Chess in 12 Lessons (Volume 1),

by Roman Pelts and Lev Alburt,
W.W. Norton and Co., 1996
